(From Electronic Keyboard Reviews)

If you’re looking for reviews of the Yamaha YPT 320 electronic keyboard, you should first be aware that it is perfectly identical to Yamaha PSR E323. They share the same manual. In fact, the front of the manual clearly states both model names.

Yamaha YPT 320 review – YPT and PSR electronic keyboards

Both Yamaha YPT and Yamaha PSR families of electronic keyboards feature entry-level keyboards, and there are many other such twin pairs, with the only differences being slight cosmetic changes, or sometimes none at all. In fact, here’s a huge hint: add 3 to any YPT model number and you get the equivalent PSR model if there’s one (e.g. YPT-320 = PSR-E323).

Why does Yamaha do this? Perhaps they just love confusing customers new to the keyboarding scene. The official reason given is that YPT was/is traditionally marketed in different markets/offline stores targeting different consumer groups from the PSR. In today’s online world, with ebay, craigslist and Amazon, though, Yamaha’s naming system is just incredibly confusing.

But hey, what do we know – it seems to have worked pretty well for them (and a few other brands as well). Yamaha, after all, is one of the most highly reputed brand names when it comes to pianos and keyboards.

So, when you go researching the best Yamaha YPT 320 price available, be sure to include the Yamaha PSR E323 in your search as well. Amazingly enough, even though both have identical features, the prices can sometimes differ quite a bit, even from the same store!

Anyway, enough of that. Let’s get on to the proper review of the Yamaha PSR-E323 YPT-320 portable keyboard.

Yamaha YPT 320 review – Main features

Size (width x height x depth): 37-3/16″ x 5-3/16″ x 14-1/2″

Weight: 10 lbs., 13 oz

61 touch-sensitive, piano-sized keys

32-note polyphony

Yamaha YPT 320 review – Who’s it for?

Ultimately, the Yamaha YPT320 61-key portable keyboard is an entry-level keyboard, and is targeted towards novices to the instrument.

In spite of its low price, the sound quality of the Yamaha keyboard YPT 320 remains top-notch, as you might expect from a Yamaha keyboard. With a special button specifically to recall Grand Piano settings in the keyboard, it’s quite obvious that Yamaha is definitely proud of their electronic reproduction of the grand piano sound, and rightfully so!

Sixty-one keys are a good start for beginners, and you will be able to play most tunes you learn as a beginner with just 61 keys. If you ever need a higher or lower range, simply use the transpose function on the Yamaha YPT 320 61 key keyboard to shift the entire keyboard an octave up or down.

The following video is a playing of “Mad World” on the Yamaha YPT 320 in one of its beautiful instrumental voices, aptly named “Dream”:

The keys of the YPT 320 Yamaha electronic keyboard are touch-sensitive. Touch-sensitivity refers to the variation in volume of notes depending on how hard you hit the keys, which is similar to the action found on acoustic pianos. This gives you true reign of expression in the songs you play, and prepares you well for moving to the acoustic or digital piano in future, if you desire to do so.

The built-in Yamaha Education Suite on the Yamaha YPT-320 keyboard splits each song into left and right hand parts. In addition, you can choose from the following lessons for certain preset songs:

“Listening, Timing, Waiting“: Listen to the entire song, then practice your timing (press any keys at the right time to ensure you’ve got the right tempo down), and finally press the correct notes in the “Waiting” mode.

“Keys to Success“: With this lesson, you can practice individual song phrases separately, and are awarded a score indicating your playing performance at the end. Get a high enough score before moving on to the next trickier phrase!

“Phrase Repeat“: Select a phrase of a song to continually repeat. Perfect for practising that tricky song section!

Yamaha YPT 320 review – Customer testimonials

If you’re still on the fence trying to decide whether the Yamaha YPT-320 musical keyboard is the right choice for you, take a look at the following snippets of customer testimonials on Amazon.com:

“…This keyboard is perfect! It has grand piano sound and also all the songs and voices you’d expect from a modern keyboard. It is very light, it doesn’t take up much space and we have it working with batteries…(continued)”

See full product review here

“…It has a ton of great features, so many that I dont’ think we will ever use many of them, but they are there if we want them. The sound is great, the volume is great and it feels good to play…(continued)”

See full product review here

“…You are not getting a professional concert item, but for home and travel play, you can’t do better than this nicely priced unit. We have been using ours for a few months and it is holding up fine under daily usage…(continued)”

Yamaha YPT 320 review – Bottomline

The Yamaha digital keyboard YPT-320 is an excellent lightweight entry-level keyboard for beginners, featuring 61 full-sized touch-sensitive keys and 482 instrumental voices. While it cannot compare to higher-end digital pianos, it’s a great and competitively-priced starter instrument for anyone wanting to learn the piano or looking for a keyboard to practice on.

Yamaha YPT 320 price

As mentioned earlier, the Yamaha YPT 320 is equivalent to the Yamaha PSR-E323. The best offer for either one is the Yamaha YPT-320 bundle with adapter, headphones and keyboard stand on Amazon.com.

The entire bundle is currently available for less than $200, which means you save almost $200 off the normal list price. Furthermore, it’s available for FREE shipping!

With an inbuilt personal piano teacher (Casio’s “step-up lessons”), as well as featuring a wide variety of great-sounding instrumental tones, this Casio keyboard is ideal for both kids and adults looking for a portable, fun and cheap alternative to the acoustic or digital piano.
Casio CTK 2100 keyboard – A good choice for beginners

The CTK 2100 Casio electronic keyboard features Casio’s step-up lessons system. In this system, practice tunes are divided up into sections or phrases and can then be learnt section by section, left and right hands separately and together, one step at a time (“listen, watch, remember” are the 3 main steps in the system).

In addition, the voice-fingering guide, where the keyboard actually voices out finger numbers if it thinks you are experiencing difficulties playing the practice pieces, can be of great help to beginners.

With 400 tones, which you can apply 10 reverb digital effects to, the fun factor in playing the same practice songs in different instrumental voices helps immensely for the keyboard beginner.

61 keys are typically enough on a beginner keyboard. Many songs, especially ones you learn as a beginner, do not typically use the full range of 88 keys found on an acoustic piano. The transpose feature (where you can shift the keys an entire octave down or up) on the Casio CTK 2100 portable keyboard allows players to properly play tunes that require only the lower notes or only the higher notes.

The Casio keyboard CTK 2100 features Casio’s AHL (acoustic and highly-compressed large-waveform) sound source. This allows all 400 built-in tones on the keyboard, including the piano tone, to mimic their acoustic counterparts more closely, compared to older Casio keyboards.

48-note polyphony is great for beginners, ensuring that notes that you play will not drop off unexpectedly especially when layering tones, using the sustain pedal (sold separately) or the auto-accompaniment features.

The following testimonial is from a keyboard beginner and satisfied owner of the Casio CTK2100 keyboard:

“…The part that I’ve enjoyed the most is the song feature that allows me to learn how to play the piano with the instrument as my teacher. It comes with a database of a hundred songs and a little screen that shows which key to press as i learn how to play each song. The lessons are structured as right hand only, left hand only and both hands so it’s easier to learn…(continued)”

See full product review here

Casio CTK 2100 review – The cons

Obviously, at such a low price, there are features that are missing which might make you think twice about buying the Casio CTK-2100 61-key electronic keyboard. However, it is important to note these features are mostly missing from most other keyboards in the same price range. If you really need them, you’ll want to increase your budget, as the Casio CTK2100 61-key personal keyboard is already one of the cheapest ones around with the advertised features.

The main cons would be:

minimal touch sensitivity (only has 2-level touch-response system), meaning the volume doesn’t vary much in response to how hard you hit the keys, as on an acoustic piano

non-weighted keys. It’s worth noting that no keyboards in this price range have any form of weighted keys at all.

sound quality of course doesn’t match newer, higher-priced keyboards

Don’t let these cons deter you, however. In spite of these downsides, the Casio CTK2100 61-key portable keyboard is still recommended for beginners by piano teachers, as evidenced by the following testimonial by a piano teacher on Amazon.com:

“…(R)emember that the tactile feedback from a true piano along with the physical sensation of piano strings vibrating has an impact on the performer’s enjoyment. You won’t get that from a beginner keyboard from any manufacturer. But I believe that this is a decent product for a reasonable price.

I don’t recommend the higher priced “touch-sensitive” keyboards such as the Privia. What I’ve experienced is that something about the ways those keys work leads to disastrous technique in my students–very bad habits that have proved difficult to correct…(continued)”

See full product review here

Here’s another testimonial from another customer on Amazon.com, who was very surprised at the value and quality of the Casio CTK2100 keyboard, especially considering its price.

“…With 400 tones, 150 rhythms (each with an alternate, so more like 300 really), tempo control, over 100 songs built in w/lessons, and auto accompanying chords there’s more than enough here to keep you busy; … weighs very little; can play up to 48 sounds at once (which you don’t realize is important until you start playing); … basic controls are simple enough that I was jamming in just a few minutes even though I don’t play piano…(continued)”

See full product review here

Here’s a video review of the keyboard from a satisfied beginner, showcasing some of the instrumental tones available:

Casio CTK 2100 review – Bottomline

With its attractive low price, the Casio CTK 2100 electronic keyboard is a great choice of an entry-level keyboard for beginners. You should not expect realistic piano touch or very high-quality sound on keyboards in this price range, but all the other features make this keyboard a great buy, providing great value for money. The immensely helpful built-in learning system can help you start learning piano without even investing in traditional piano lessons!

Casio CTK 2100 price

The Casio keyboard CTK 2100 typically retails for over $150 in stores.

Amazon, however, has it listed at just under $90 for the Casio CTK 2100 keyboard alone (see the product listing here), or less than $120 for a bundle including headphones, stand, and power supply AC adaptor (see the bundle listing here). Both listings are available for FREE shipping.

These are both special time-limited offers where you get to save 40% or more off the actual list price, so be sure to check them out!

(From Electronic Keyboard Reviews)

Welcome to our Yamaha YPG 235 (or DGX 230) electronic keyboard review.

First, it is worth noting that the Yamaha YPG 235 is completely identical to the DGX 230, except perhaps for the color. They even share the same manual. Thus, when shopping around, you’ll want to look at prices for the Yamaha DGX-230 as well, in case it’s cheaper. Yamaha notoriously does this with several of its keyboards (having the same keyboard under completely different model names) which sometimes leads to confusion, especially when prices between the two identical models differ drastically. You can probably blame marketing for that; the 2 models are typically sold offline at different shops targeting different consumer groups.

The Yamaha YPG 235 keyboard is a portable grand piano keyboard featuring 76 piano-sized keys with “graded soft touch” (non-weighted, but with a bit of resistance) and a wide choice of high-quality instrumental tones. If you feel that 61 keys are not quite enough for a keyboard, and you don’t require the full set of 88 piano keys, then the Yamaha keyboard YPG-235 might be an ideal choice for you, whether you’re a student or an expert pianist.

Yamaha YPG 235 review – A cheap and portable replacement for an acoustic piano

The Yamaha YPG-235 electronic keyboard is a great, cheap alternative to the acoustic piano. Just take a look at the following review from an impressed buyer of the YPG 235 on Amazon.com:

“…I wanted something that had keys that looked like a piano, felt like a piano, and sounded like a piano but didn’t cost like a piano. The Yamaha 235 is exactly what I was looking for. It is amazing how much like a piano it feels and sounds…(continued)”

See full product review here

So what makes the Yamaha YPG 235 a good replacement for an acoustic piano? The main reasons are:

full keyboard mode

realistic sound quality

graded soft touch action with touch-response keys

Let’s take a look at these features in more detail.

Full Keyboard Mode

With the “Full Keyboard Mode“, the YPG 235 Yamaha sets itself apart from other electronic keyboards in this price range. While many portable keyboards require you to chord only on the left (bass) side of the keyboard when using the auto-accompaniment feature, the Yamaha Portable Grand YPG-235 electronic keyboard allows you to chord on the right side and play bass notes on the left, which matches the piano playing style more closely.

Realistic sound quality

With Yamaha keyboards, you can absolutely trust in the professional quality of the sound, especially the grand piano sound. Yamaha, after all, is a professional maker of countless acoustic (and digital) pianos and understands the nuances of reproducing the sounds electronically. The YPG 235 Yamaha keyboard is no different; you can expect realistic stereo sound quality not just in the grand piano tone, but all the other instrumental tones including the drum kits!

In addition, with 5 master equalizer (Master EQ) settings, you get to control the quality of the sound as it is reproduced through the internal speakers, external speaker system, or through your headphones!

Watch the following video which showcases the strings and grand piano instrumental voices of the Yamaha YPG235/DGX230:

Graded Soft Touch Action with Touch-Response Keys

As with most keyboards in this price range, don’t expect to find realistic weighted keys that simulate the feel of a true acoustic piano keys. Instead, the Yamaha YPG-235 76-key keyboard goes a step further than most other keyboards in this price range by providing “graded soft touch” action. That means that the keys offer slight resistance, with the lower keys on the left feeling just a tad heavier than the higher keys on the right, as on an acoustic piano. This does help if you plan to migrate to an acoustic or a digital piano with fully-weighted keys in future.

With 76 touch-response keys (meaning the loudness of a note varies depending on how hard you hit a key), the Yamaha YPG 235 is a great choice if you’re looking for a less costly alternative to an acoustic or digital piano, especially if you’re of the opinion that 61 keys is too limiting and you don’t require a full set of 88 keys (and you really don’t unless you’re already a very advanced pianist).

Take a look at the following snippet of a review by another very happy owner of the Yamaha YPG 235 electronic keyboard, referencing the touch of the keyboard, taken from Amazon.com:

“…the 235 possesses piano style Graded Soft Touch (GST) keys, which are not exactly weighted but occupy that perfect gap between pure synth keys and weighted. The feel is perfect for one who is used to standard synth-style keyboard keys yet longs for a little more control without sacrificing playability…(continued)”

See full product review here

Yamaha YPG 235 Review – Fun learning instrument

An advantage of an electronic keyboard versus a traditional piano is the wide choice of different instrumental sounds you can have in a keyboard. The YPG 235 has 116 panel voices, 361 XGLite voices and 12 SFX/drum kits. With a pitch-bend wheel and 9 reverb effects, you can have great fun playing and hearing different instruments when practising songs on the keyboard.

The keyboard is equipped with Yamaha Education Suite (Y.E.S.) along with a chord dictionary.

The Y.E.S. here is actually a little different from other Yamaha keyboards. Each of the 30 built-in songs and 70 songs on the included CD-ROM is divided into left and right hand parts, and there are 3 lessons for each hand:

“Waiting Mode“: playback stops until you press the right note

“Your Tempo Mode“: an innovative feature where the song actually slows down when you hit too many wrong notes to match your playing speed more accurately. This is great for learning at a pace suitable for you.

“Minus One Mode“: Choose the part of the song you want to play, and the song will play normally except for that chosen part. Listen and play along at the same time!

There’s also the “Repeat and Learn” button which moves back a song four measures from the point you pressed the button. After all, practice makes perfect, and this feature is extremely handy for beginners.

Finally, notes and chord names are displayed on the LCD screen as you play them. The chord dictionary hows you how to play the chords, which is an essential skill to have as a keyboardist or aspiring pianist, especially for learning to play by ear.

Here’s a snippet of a testimonial comparing the YPG-235 with an older Yamaha keyboard. The testimonial is from yet another satisfied buyer of the Yamaha YPG 235 grand portable keyboard, on Amazon.com:

“…I was amazed at the features that the YPG-235 had that triumphed over the older version–for instance, a jog dial and a much better quality, now LED-lit screen showed a cool, blue radiance to it along with a full version of the music staff and a full preview of the keys being played was a major step forward. It also was significantly less crowded than the previous version, offering several more features…(continued)”

See full product review here

Yamaha YPG 235 Electronic Keyboard Review – Bottomline

The Yamaha YPG 235 portable keyboard is a good choice for a cheap replacement to the acoustic piano with its realistic sound, full keyboard mode and graded soft touch action with touch-response keys. In addition, with its wide array of instrumental sounds, and the innovative Yamaha Education Suite, it’s a fun learning tool for students or complete beginners. If sixty-one keys are too limiting for you, then consider getting the Yamaha YPG 235.

Yamaha YPG 235 Price

A great deal for the Yamaha keyboard YPG-235 can be found on Amazon. It is currently on sale for less than $250. That’s a savings of over $200 or over 50% off the listed price! With that current sale, it is actually cheaper than the DGX-230 which is also available on Amazon.

The listing does not include the official PA150 adapter or any kind of stand, so be sure to include them in your budget. A recommended Yamaha YPG 235 stand is the Yamaha PKBS1 adjustable X-Style keyboard stand. If you prefer a more stable platform stand instead of an X-stand, take a look at the Yamaha LW-16 stand (both stands are available on Amazon).

Casio WK 500 Review – AHL sound technology

A distinctive feature of the Casio WK 500 which sets it apart from most keyboards in a similar price range is Casio’s AHL technology (acoustic and highly-compressed large-waveform). With this technology, the tones on the Casio WK500 76-key personal keyboard all sound pretty good, while still allowing the price of the keyboard to remain competitive.

Take a look at a one of the many Casio WK 500 reviews from satisfied customers on Amazon.com:

“…The keyboard is exactly what I expected, and very good quality tone (unlike the earlier casio’s that had very bad tone quality)…(continued)”

Casio WK 500 Review – A great keyboard for learning at your own pace

The Casio keyboard WK 500 features Casio’s step-up learning system. It’s based on the principle of learning by playing. Each practice piece is divided into bar sections, and just as in a traditional piano lesson, each section can be learnt separately. Left and right hand parts can be learnt separately and then combined when you’re ready to do so.

The step-up learning system features 3 main steps:

Listen

Watch (and repeat with visual aid)

Remember (and play without assistance)

With 152 built-in songs, the Casio keyboard WK500 is an ideal choice of instrument for self-learning the piano at your own pace.

In addition to the step-up learning system, the WK500 Casio electronic keyboard also features the “Music Challenge” play function. This is a fun feature where players can test their response speed by trying to hit keys displayed on screen as quickly as possible.

The following snippet from an Amazon.com customer review speaks highly of the step-up learning system:

“…76 touch sensitive keys allowing you to play those early learner classics like Moonlight Sonata with feeling and it has a brilliant step-by-step teacher which I wish I’d had to begin with. Some of the songs in the songbook are corny and old fashioned but it’s an interesting history lesson in classic and popular music…(continued)”

See full product review here

Casio WK 500 review – A fun keyboard to play with

The 670 built-in tones, 200 built-in rhythms and pitch-bend wheel in the Casio WK 500 keyboard provides great flexibility and boundless fun. If, during your piano lessons, you ever get bored trying to play a piano piece over and over again in the same piano tone, simply try playing it in a different tone on the keyboard! You might be surprised at how a little variety can renew your passion for learning the keyboard.

With recording capabilities including the special sampling function allowing you to record your own 10-second samples via the mic or audio-input jacks, as well as the pitch-bend wheel, a range of arpeggios, and digital effects, you can have a lot of fun composing your own masterpieces featuring lovely, soothing or just plain weird instrumental tones. The possibilities for creating your own unique instrumental sounds are literally endless with the Casio WK500 keyboard.

Take a look at the following review from yet another satisfied customer on Amazon.com:

“…If you are a beginner, then this keyboard is a great start. It comes with tons of tones, some beats, a metronome, a distortion wheel, SD card slot, and a USB port. You can also layer tones, split them, and record your own…(continued)”

See full product review here

Casio WK 500 Electronic Keyboard Workstation – Bottomline

As we’ve established, the Casio WK 500 electronic keyboard is an ideal choice of instrument for beginners and intermediate players. Beginners can learn at their own pace and have fun doing so using the step-up learning system. With its realistic instrumental tones, and powerful sampling and recording features, the Casio WK-500 is also a fun instrument for composing your own masterpieces.

Casio WK 500 price

One of the best places to grab the Casio WK 500 electronic keyboard is Amazon.com. There’s a great bundle offering there featuring the Casio WK 500 keyboard, a keyboard stand, headphones and power supply at an incredible price of less than $250. That’s an amazing savings of over 50% or close to $300 off the normal list price.

It’s highly likely that you’ll find this keyboard retailing in stores for almost twice the price you can get from Amazon.com, and that’s for the keyboard alone. So be sure to grab the special offer on Amazon.com now. In addition, the bundle is available for FREE shipping there!

Yamaha EZ-200 electronic keyboard review – Perfect learning keyboard for beginners

So what makes the EZ200 Yamaha such an ideal learning keyboard for beginners? The answer is the Yamaha Education Suite with 100 built-in practice tunes.

Not only are the practice songs divided into individual sections, which are further divided into left and right hand parts that you can learn in incremental steps, even the proper fingering is displayed in the LCD.

Furthermore, musical staves for the left and right hand parts are displayed in the LCD. Although admittedly small, they will nevertheless help a complete beginner to start learning to associate the keys with the musical notes, an important first step in learning to read sheet music.

The 3 main lessons (Listen & Learn, Timing, Waiting) which you can apply to each hand separately or combined, in combination with the “lighted keys” feature which lights up keys to be pressed as you’re practising tunes, will help you master the songs in no time.

The following is a snippet of an Amazon.com testimonial by a customer who absolutely loves his Yamaha EZ-200 61 key keyboard, especially the built-in lessons, and describes the lesson system in great detail.

“…I love this keyboard and the teaching system. I have found the multiple teaching methods to be very handy and clever. You have the option of learning by following along with a demonstration while the keys light up, or you can just sit and watch and learn, or you can practice tapping out the rhythm on any key just to get the pacing right, or you can use the “wait” method … I like that you can turn off the demonstration at any point, and you can turn off the lighted keys if you like and just play the instrument like a regular piano…(continued)”

With the Yamaha EZ200 keyboard, you can learn to play the keyboard at your own pace without ever having to pay for piano lessons!

Yamaha EZ200 review – High sound quality

Yamaha is renowned for its superior acoustic pianos as well as digital pianos. It’s very proud of its grand piano sound in its entry-level keyboards, and rightfully so. The amazing sound quality of the grand piano tone is highly evident in all of Yamaha’s keyboards.

The Yamaha keyboard EZ200 features stereo-sampling technology, and its 2 built-in speakers are true stereo speakers with two separate amplifiers. This gives the keyboard its superior sound quality.

Granted, there are subtle differences between the grand piano tone in the Yamaha EZ-200 keyboard and the acoustic piano sound. Nonetheless, it is definitely more than good enough for a starter keyboard, and is superior to other brands of keyboards in this price range.

The over-360 different instrumental tones or voices are definitely a fun feature to have on any keyboard. If you ever get bored practising the same tunes over and over again in the same instrumental tone, just switch tones and breathe life back into your practice sessions.

The following customer review is just one out of many which praise the high quality sound of the Yamaha EZ200 61-key lighted keyboard:

“…One thing that I really like about this keyboard [EZ200 Yamaha] is that it’s piano voice sounds just like a high-quality grand piano…(continued)”

Yamaha EZ-200 Review – Bottomline

The Yamaha EZ-200 was specifically designed as an entry-level keyboard with beginners in mind. With the Yamaha Education Suite, fingering guide system and lighted keys, you can easily learn to play the keyboard without having to spend a fortune on lessons. Of course, at this price range, features such as realistic piano touch (that includes weighted keys and FULL touch sensitivity) are not available, but the Yamaha EZ-200 electronic keyboard more than makes up for it with its distinctive high-quality grand piano sound and huge array of other voices.

Even though the keyboard does not feature full touch sensitivity as on an acoustic piano, it is still much better than many other keyboards in this price range, as evidenced by the customer testimonial below from Amazon.com:

“…The touch sensitivity works really well considering the price, I can count about six degrees of loudness depending on how firmly the key is played. The keys are about the right size and they play well but again they are not “weighted” and they don’t feel like a real piano but they don’t feel cheap or poorly made either…(continued)”
